Large Anthropometer Measurement Instrument

The Lafayette Instrument Large Anthropometer is a premium sliding anthropometric caliper engineered for the precise measurement of straight-line distances between anatomical body landmarks. Trusted by professionals across healthcare, sports science, military, and research settings, this instrument is the gold standard for anthropometric assessment.

Anthropometry — the science of measuring the human body — is a critical component of physical evaluation, body composition analysis, ergonomic design, fitness assessment, and clinical research. Accurate anthropometric data informs treatment decisions, tracks patient progress, guides equipment design, and ensures compliance with occupational health standards. The right instrument makes all the difference.

Constructed from durable anodized aluminum with a smooth-gliding HDPE (high-density polyethylene) sliding block, is built to withstand the demands of daily clinical or field use while remaining lightweight enough for comfortable one-handed operation. At 32.5 inches in length and capable of measuring up to 70 cm, it handles full-body landmark measurements that smaller calipers simply cannot reach.

Measure body dimensions with clinical precision. The Lafayette Large Anthropometer delivers 1 mm measurement accuracy across a 70 cm range — built for physical therapists, athletic trainers, sports scientists, and clinical researchers who need dependable, repeatable results.

  • Measures up to 70 cm (without tips) at 1 mm accuracy
  • Lightweight anodized aluminum body with HDPE sliding block
  • Optional tips for measuring across bony prominences
  • Easy-to-read scale — right edge without tips, left edge with tips
  • 1-Year Manufacturer's Warranty from Lafayette Instrument Company
  • Made in the USA — Lafayette, Indiana since 1947

Who Uses an Anthropometer?

The Large Anthropometer is an essential tool for any professional who needs to capture precise body measurements. Whether you're evaluating a patient's rehabilitation progress, collecting research data, or designing equipment to fit a human body, this instrument gives you the accuracy and repeatability you need.

Physical Therapists & Clinicians

Assess limb lengths, joint widths, and skeletal proportions to track treatment outcomes and guide rehabilitation protocols.

Athletic Trainers & Sports Scientists

Profile athlete body dimensions for performance optimization, injury prevention, and sport-specific training programs.

Clinical & Academic Researchers

Collect standardized anthropometric data for population studies, biomechanics research, and body composition analysis.

Fitness & Nutrition Professionals

Evaluate body structure and track changes over time to support personalized nutrition plans and body composition goals.

Military & Occupational Health

Measure personnel body dimensions for equipment fitting, uniform sizing, vehicle design, and physical standards compliance.

Ergonomists & Human Factors Engineers

Capture body measurements to design workstations, tools, and equipment that fit the full range of human body sizes.

Why Choose the Lafayette Large Anthropometer?

Not all anthropometers are created equal. Here's what sets the Lafayette Model apart from the competition:

1 mm Clinical Accuracy

Every measurement is accurate to 1 millimeter — the level of precision required in clinical, research, and professional settings where data integrity matters.

70 cm Measurement Range

With a maximum range of 70 cm (without tips), the large anthropometer handles full-scale body landmark measurements that smaller tools cannot accommodate.

Durable, Lightweight Construction

The anodized aluminum body resists corrosion and stands up to heavy clinical use, while remaining light enough for extended, comfortable handling.

Five Optional Tip Positions

Five threaded hole sets on each arm allow optional tips to be positioned precisely, enabling accurate measurements across bony landmarks and irregular contours.

Easy to Clean & Maintain

Compatible with soap and water or isopropyl alcohol wipes, the Model is simple to keep clean between patient assessments — critical in clinical environments.

Trusted Manufacturer Since 1947

Lafayette Instrument Company has been a trusted name in measurement and assessment instrumentation for decades, serving healthcare, military, and research institutions worldwide.

How to Use the Large Anthropometer

Proper technique ensures accurate, repeatable measurements. Follow these steps as outlined in the official Lafayette Instrument Company user instructions:

  1. Prepare the Subject: The subject should wear minimal clothing to allow clear access to the anatomical landmarks being measured.

  2. Identify Anatomical Sites: Identify and mark all anatomical sites to be measured before beginning. Consistency in landmark identification is critical for accurate results.

  3. Measure from the Right Side: All measurements should be taken from the right side of the body in accordance with standard anthropometric practice.

  4. Grip and Position the Caliper: Grip the anthropometer with the caliper arms resting against your forearms. Apply gentle, even pressure to the branches, moving the arm ends to the desired landmarks.

  5. Read the Scale: Use the right edge of the slider to read the scale along the base of the caliper when no tips are installed.
